A good chunk of 2018 was packed with great movies, but some of the best ones were released on the wrong platforms, according to new data from Box Office Mojo.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported that the studios’ movie calendar is not as full as they once claimed, with fewer than a dozen new releases on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Video in 2018.
But this year, box office grosses from all the platforms totaled about $5.4 billion.
It was up from just $3.5 billion in 2017, the year the industry’s new-year movies got their big releases, according, according Box OfficeMojo.
That’s a huge improvement from the year before, when studios were scrambling to release a movie at the same time as their big-budget movies.
The studios were hoping to make the best movies available on all platforms, but that wasn’t enough for many audiences, who wanted to see their favorite movies first.
“For a lot of people, the movies were the first thing they saw,” Box Office Manager Joe Mandele said in an interview.
“And now that they’ve seen them all, they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to see all of them!'”
The new data shows that the best-performing platforms in 2018 were Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, YouTube, YouTube Red, Vudu and YouTube Gaming.
The studios were also on the upswing this year with an influx of big-name movies on Netflix and a new slate of big hits from the studios.
But some of these movies, like “The Great Wall,” a new film by Guillermo del Toro, are not getting the recognition they deserve, Box Office says.
The best-selling Netflix film of the year in 2018, “The Secret Life of Pets,” earned just $4.5 million.
Netflix was able to pull this off with a mix of big stars like Angelina Jolie, Emma Stone and Ben Affleck.
The film was also made for the big screen, with the director’s approval.
But Netflix said the movie was not a part of its “top 10 best movies of the decade.”
In fact, ” The Secret Life ” scored less than $100 million at the domestic box office, and it wasn’t even on the top 20, according a Deadline report.
“The Secret,” which starred Angelina Paes, won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The movie is a sequel to a 2014 film about the “pets” who are responsible for bringing about a pandemic.
Netflix is also behind a new TV show about the pets called “The Purge,” which stars Jeremy Renner.
The film is not eligible for Oscar consideration, but Netflix said it’s working with its film department to try to improve the film.
Netflix’s release schedule was even more chaotic in 2018 than it was in 2017.
The company had no new releases this year that weren’t already in theaters.
It only released five new films on Netflix in the last four months of 2018, and only two of them were nominated for an Oscar.
“It was a chaotic year, in terms of releasing movies,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement.
“We didn’t have a lot to release in 2018 that we didn’t already have in theaters.”
In 2018, Netflix released just five movies.
Netflix did release five new releases in January, including the Sundance-winning “The Last Ship,” which is set in the aftermath of World War II.
Netflix also released two movies, “Fury” and “The Shape of Water,” in January.
The studio also had a good year, releasing five movies in March.
Netflix released five films in June, including “Wonderland,” which won the best picture Oscar for its director, Edgar Wright.
Netflix announced the addition of two films to its slate in August: “Loving Vincent” and the “A Million Little Pieces” feature.
Netflix said its films had grossed $7.4 million worldwide in 2018 compared to $2.8 million in 2017 and $4 million in 2016.
